gear lever rattle

Greetings,

I have a 1965 Lotus Cortina and the gear lever rattles like mad at around 5000 rpm. Is there something I might be able to do to assist with this rattle? I have no issues getting into gear or shifting on the move. Its just that the rattle is so intense that I'm unable to utilize the upper rev range. I am most appreciative of any assistance.

Kindest regards and many thanks,

Hans.

Greetings Keith,

Thanks so very much. I am most appreciative. Where is the best place to buy these?

Kindest regards,
Hans

I put bronze bushes in mine,- I think they were from the Mk1 Owners.
Also pack the half ball pivot joint with some grease.

Greetings gentleman,

Thank you so very much. I am most appreciative. I will order the recommended bushes. I very much hope it works as the engine seems to really come alive just as the lever starts buzzing.

Kindest regards and many thanks,

Hans

On my LC I discovered most of the rattle was caused by an incorrect spring getting installed in the shifter by the previous owner. Once replaced 90% of my buzzing hornets nest was gone. Easy to replace the spring also while you are replacing the shift rod bushing.

Thanks Keith, I have just ordered it.
A friend and myself are driving up to Dons on the Scottish Borders at the end of the month for the weekend to visit The Jim Clark museum, it would be nice to loose the rattle as it is a long journey

Hans, I Will look at the spring at the same time.

Late last night I went into my garage to fit the new flasher sounder I purchased. I took the drivers seat out to make it easier to get under the dash to fi itt. As I had the seat out I decided to fit the new gear lever washers I received from Kelevdon Lotus.
When I got to the gear lever pivot bolt, I found there were no washers fitted. I think this is probably the cause of the rattle/tizz. After fitting the new washers the gear lever seems much more precise.
Will let you know how it goes when I get to refit the interior and test drive.

I replaced all of the plastic bits in my shifter and still had a hornets nest at highway (UK=motorway?) speeds. A friend and fellow Cortina owner recommended I replace the shifter spring.

Come to find out the shifter spring that was in place was nearly half the height of the correct replacement spring. So somewhere in the cars past it had been replaced with a non-standard part. The new spring eliminated roughly 90% of my shifter buzz at highway speeds.

I took car out for a run this morning.
Pete, you were right... what a difference!! No more missed 3rd gear when enthusiastically pulling away from the lights. 🏎 😁
The annoying rattle/fizz has also gone which will make the journey to Dons on Friday more enjoyable
Thanks everyone for your help

Cheers
Paul
