Replacement batteries.

Morning all.

After just three years my second Lincon battery has failed. The first one lasted six years which I thought was pretty good but three is just not enough so I feel I must now join the "Lincon Batteries Are Crap Club".

Question is, what to do now? Has anyone succsessfully fixed a new smaller modern battery into an old Lincon case? I'm sure I've seen somewhere that it's been done. Any advice would be most welcome as I've just finished putting my engine back in the car & am keen to get out for a blast.

Dave, my current Lincon battery is just over 5yrs old and still very lively!
I keep it on charge with a CTEK smart charger, particularly over winter.

Hello Pete,

Mine's been on a charger permanently. I get the impression that there are fairly good Lincon batteries & bad ones.

Maybe we'll have a few more comments.

Just 'phoned (4:55pm) Lincon to ask how much distilled water it takes to fill my 183 battery. Reply was "We're just locking up, can you call back in the morning and we can discuss it then".

You don't fill batteries with distilled water, you only top them up with it ??
Is yours dry.

I just want to know how much water my old holds. I googled the question but can't find an answer.

It seems if I add half a teaspoon of backing powder for each half pint of water it will neutralise the acid. Then I can dispose of it safely then I can possibly use the case to house a smaller modern battery.

Just ask Lincon if they can put modern battery internals into a classic style case.

I have written an article about doing this with the Autolite reproduction batteries for 60's Mustangs. The references to suppliers and prices won't help (and are all out of date anyway) but the procedure is the same for any lead acid battery. Let me know if you can't view this link;

I have just ordered a new replacement battery from Shield Batteries in Bishop’s Stortford, Herts. It’s a period copy of the original type for that era. They are a great company and super efficient. They have branches in different locations around UK.

If you go on the web sites for Shield and Lincon they are the same just a different label on the case!!
Having been to Lincon to collect I would say that is where they are made ?
