Due to ill health I no longer have the time or energy to complete the restoration project of this authentic Mk1 Lotus Cortina.
This is a genuine Lotus Cortina which the previous owner had authenticated by Andy Morrell of The Lotus Cortina Register. This car, was included in a batch of seventeen Lotus Cortina’s that were exported to the USA in June of 1966, from Ford’s assembly plant in Dagenham. It went to the sunny state of California, which bears out in the condition of the excellent body shell. The body still has its original chassis number stamping. In 1976 the car was exported to Italy but little is known about its history thereafter. With thanks to Andy Morrell, who assisted with the UK registration, the DVLA have issued this car with the correct “D” suffix on its new registration. I purchased the car on the 13th April 2024, in the condition you see it now. I have a current V5, in my name, at my home address, where the car resides. I have not been able to do any work on it except for getting the struts refurbished by GAZ.
The body shell has had the vast majority of its metal work completed, along with the right hand drive conversion. The bulkhead still needs to be drilled for the master cylinders on the right hand side, and the bulkhead reinforcing plate (which I have) added. What remains is largely detailing work, and prepping for paint. Both doors have been re-skinned up to the body swage line, and are in very good order. Both the bonnet and boot will need some work to their outer edges. Overall the body and ancillaries are in excellent condition.
The engine was re-built prior to my purchase. The block and head numbers are matching, this number also features on the current V5. Not having any build sheets or receipts, the previous owner removed the sump and inspected a main and big end for journal sizes. Mains +030”, big ends +020”. Everything looked correct and clean, and it looks like new pistons have been fitted. The cam cover was also removed to inspect the cams, they look like new, and are standard 0. 350” lift. It also has a rebuilt pair of 40DCOE’s. Also included, is a new flywheel. I was told that £12, 000 was spent on the engine re-build which with the new components fitted seems feasible. I was also told that the gearbox has been rebuilt. The rest of the parts will largely require restoration work in varying degrees. What you see in the photographs is what comes with the car with the exception of the engine stand. The correct four 881A 13x5, 1/ 2J steel wheels have been blasted and powder coated, and fitted with new tyres. The two front quarter bumpers are new. Struts have been upgraded by GAZ to adjustable with standard springs. Rear shock absorbers are “new old stock”. There is a complete set of instruments, glass, seats and panels.
You're very welcome to view, which I encourage, I'm available most times and will answer any sensible questions prior to a visit.
I'm 1 mile from junction 8 of the M25. I bought it because the body is in excellent condition. Obviously the previous owners have spent a lot of time and money to get it to it's present state.
It's history is described previously.View attachment 1View attachment 2View attachment 3View attachment 4View attachment 5View attachment 6View attachment 7View attachment 8View attachment 8View attachment 10View attachment 11View attachment 12View attachment 13
