Low Emission Zone - London

I was driving north at the top of the M23 motorway on the outskirts of London last weekend and noticed a new sign - "Low Emission Zone Ahead". Does anyone know what that's all about? Should I worry next time I approach the zone in the Lotus?

Only worry if your'e driving a ?? tonne truck with age old mechanics.

Vehicles throwing out very high CO2 emissions are heavily penalised (up to £1000) for going into a Low Emission Zone (LEZ). You are picked up on the congestion charge cameras, vehicle details checked automatically and hey presto Transport for London knows if you are driving a vehicle which is unhealthy for the rest of us.

You need to have paid the daily charge beforehand to avoid the penalty.

LEZ
Its causing many people problems. Any Lorry now older than 2001 can not go into the LEZ zone unless they want to pay £200 a day.
You can have your lorry converted to meet emission regs but its just not worth it at around £5k to do it.
The LEZ starts just inside M25 perimiter.
I have had to buy a newer car transporter and a few friends I know have had to replace horseboxes?? Which is not cheap hobby.
We have all got to thank Mr Livingstone for doing such a good job.
Oh and the next thing so I was told today is the conjestion charge for bigger cars is going up to £25 per day.

What´s the weight limit for vehicles going into the LE zone in London that will be affected by the LE demands?

Here we have the same stuff, and the limit here is 3500 kg.

I maybe wrong but is it 7.5 tonnes and over.

 And as for Mr Livingston, even if he did let us use a horse and cart within the M25, he would probably state that the horse would require a catalytic converter shoved up its arse !!

Sorry but the blokes living on a different planet, as its certainly not this one. He could do with a couple of inserted catalytic converters shoved up either end just to be sure, as im sure sure which end of him produces more sh*t.

Rant over..

at the moment its trucks over 12 tonne, come July it will be extended to other HGVs including coach's but not cars.

All detail are on the Transport for London web site, longwinded but all permutations covered. The requirements are to be broadened and the vehicle weight categories lowered as time goes on. I think it is only planned to affect CI powered vehicles and will eventually come down to minibus/light van size.
One thing that passed through my mind is what other use will all the cameras be put to.

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ in case any of you need some bedtime reading.

I have mixed views on Ken's policies. He has cut down congestion, it is easier to drive in certain areas of London and i agree with penalising the Cheslsea tractor brigade, but he is not the most popular person in the country.

ps

Before any of our Southern Hemisphere friends ask what a Chelsea tractor is - it is people living in Chelsea and Westminster owning huge great 4 x 4's to do the school run in when the vehicles are designed for country living.

I dont think congestion has been cut down just moved around a bit.
To get across London East to West ? The Embankment is clearer but
try and get along Euston or Marylebone Rd, Its nose to tail now.
Our vans are in central London everyday and the conjestion charge just gets added to the customers/clients bill. So its the average everyday person that ends up paying??
Good on yer Ken, keep up the good work. Congestion charge, LEZ charge.
I wonder what will be next.

I read in the paper today that Ken is going to scrap congestion charge discounts for alternative fuel cars - so all those people who forked out on LPG conversions a few years back will be getting shafted.

Londoners really need to get shot of this crook.

I've got a Congestion Charge exempt vehicle that I only keep for across town use, not aware of any ending of this as it's just been renewed for another year.
I've met Red Ken through work and in person and all I can say is don't believe all the negative stuff in the press about him.

Why is your vehicle congestion charge exempt though,- small engine, electric?
With dual fuel vehicles there is no way of knowing which fuel they are using,- could be using petrol or diesel like any other car driving through 'the smoke', LPG outlets are still not that common.
Having driven in and out of London on and off over the years, there are definitely days when you can see a brown coloured haze over the city, and that is just the polution that you can see!!
I quite agree with the need to reduce it, it's how you go about it.
The 9.00-5.00 commuters should be reduced for a start with the public transport network that London has and the Black Cabs that drive around looking for fares, quite a few of which belch out black smoke all the time, and while I am at it, why should they be allowed to use the bus lanes??

Recovery trucks are exempt from congestion charge but not the LEZ.

So take a pre October 2001 recovery lorry into London after July for a day and it will only cost £200.00 What a result an £8.00 saving

My exempt vehicle is a factory built 9 seater that falls into the 9 and over seat vehicle exemption category. Being petrol powered it will also avoid the LEZ charge when brought in for mini bus size vehicles. It sort of ridicules the system but some you win some you lose.

hard to see many winning anything, only ken the highwaymans coffers.hows his cleaner than clean mate doing now ?? all crooks!!

It's all very interesting - thanks guys. I guess Mr Methane is banned from going anywhere near London! If you've never heard of him, check out his website!!

Mr Methane is:

A chemical compound with the molecular formula CH4. It is the simplest alkane, and the principal component of natural gas. Methane's bond angles are 109.5 degrees. Burning one molecule of methane in the presence of oxygen releases one molecule of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and two molecules of H2O:

CH4 + 2O2 ? CO2 + 2H2O

I got this from his website, want more?

Ah but Mr Methane plays Smoke on the Water using only methane and his arse! Has to be seen to be believed.
