Octane Booster

Can anyone recommend a good octane booster to raise the 98 octane unleaded to say 100. I have heard that Castrol make a good one but I am not sure. Thanks

Not used it for a while, but the Castrol one was what I used, I think last time I looked the Aldon one worked out cheaper, (if it's still available?)

Is it worth buying an additive when Tescos and Shell V-Power are 99 Octane ?
Also if you do a search you might be able to get 5 star near you and that used to be 101

While in the area of this subject, does anyone have an opinion on valve seats, should std ones be changed, if so, any ideas on a competent shop to do the job? Kent / Sussex area if poss.

you only need to use higher octane in your car
if the comp ratio has changed

and is higher
wasting your money otherwise

if your comp ratio is standard but have a bit more timing in the car
then maybe a higher octane at the pump (premium)

but unless your running 11:1 or more no need

If we are just talking about the octane rating's (and not anything else these additives can contain), then they can also be very useful to keep a bottle in case you are stuck somewhere you can only get lower octance fuel, to bring back up to the equivelent of 5 star.
After doing the sums I found I'd get better mpg using shell optimax 98-99 (now V-power), in fact it was enough of a difference to make up for the higher pump price.

Is it necessary to use an octane booster if your head has been converted to run on unleaded?

I know that my lotus doesn't like our 95 octane "regular" and definitely needs a booster. These engines were built for 101 octane 5 star and even garages with 97 octane "super", are few and far between where I live, so I need to keep a tin of booster in the boot .

Hi Will,
No different thing.
Basically the car's from new were set up to run on 5 star (which is 100-101)
In layman's terms the octane number is how easy it is for the fuel to ignite.

From my experience using modern fuels in a twink...

98-99 (optimax/v-power/good super unleaded) Good for road use, worth a drop of octance booster for track days/motorsport to bring up back up to 100

97 (super unleaded) okay for road use

95 (normal/regular uk) okay for occasional fill-ups, i'd perfer to add octance booster to bring that figure up.

under 95 (not taken the LC to eastern europe yet)...Rather be towed to the next fuel station!

Cheers
Louis
P.S All recommendations depend on your current engine tune, timing, etc,etc

sorry regular ULP is about 91 i think

then there is a 95 ULP

and a 98 premuim ULP

will be much the same as what you have

and will, if your head has been converted to run on

unleaded it only means it has hardened valve inserts

because there is no lead in fuel now to lubricate the valve seats

went into a shell garage and they had a pump selling performance fuel and it even said its for motorsport use. mind it was 2.48 a litre

Was that at or near a track?
cheers

P.S Anyone who dos'ent need to worry about running a fuel without tax on it. ie race cars etc. Should get in touch with there local avaition fuel supplier, the choice of 100 plus rated leaded and unleaded fuels is staggering and much cheaper than race fuel and often cheaper than pump fuel.

I was running a single seater with 11-1 compression V8 running on avgas circa 1995-98 but, I was told it did NOT contain lead, & all piston engined vintage aircraft have to be modified the same as cars......
One supply was Biggin Hill the other at Headcorn Kent, cost (then) about half as much again to buy though.

I will check it out in case things have changed since, & let you know.

Cheers
