Any body know some where that rebuilds these,or even better a recon unit.
its a lucas starter with these numbers stamped,M35G 25109A 1 65 12v
on the solinoid part are the numbers 0275 lucas 9S 12vER
Have someone going back to the uk next week,to the Liverpool area, but any where may have to do.
Andy.

Hi Andy,

Don't take it to Liverpool they'll have anything away there!

What is the problem with the starter?
Mostly you get a lazy solenoid which normally means a good blow out and a bit of lubrication. Brushes are another easy fix.
If the armature has gone then that is a bit different but not the end of the world. I think any Escort with a crossflow engine would work exactly the same. If not then the armature/winding will be the same so transfer into your body.
Failing that any old Lucas workshops(Now under a different name I expect) refurbisher will be able to overhaul it.

Hi Andy

I bought the Bosch one at £45 and it fits fine on the engine and box, as I will be converting mine to a pre engaged starter when I rebuilt it.

Hi All,

Also having trouble with my starter motor (must be the cold weather?) but mine is an inertia type, not the pre-engaged. My workshop manual suggests that the pre-engaged was only fitted when 'cold start' equipment is requested.

I'm guessing that the pre-engaged was standard in the UK as most pictures show the solenoid on the bulkhead of the car. Can anyone confirm this? Also, any recommendations for a supplier of the inertia unit gratefully received.

I ended up fiitting a lightwieght, gear reduction starter surpplied by Dave Bean,in the U.S.
Hes guys were the only ones who would assure me they had one to fit,as he fits them to all his race t/c engines
The bosch one one ebay,i was told by the company selling them that it would not be ideal for the mk1 lotus.
The other pre engagers on e bay would have been to risky owing to the shipping ect.
The people selling the reduction ones in the U.K,again, could no garentee it would fit the Lotus Cortina

Very happy with the starter, fires the car up instantly!!
