Steering shaft

Hi

Restoring all mechanicals on my car, 1964 late Pre-Aeroflow. Everything has been taken out of the engine compartment, and the engine is being restored at the moment.
All steering parts have been media blasted, and will be painted and refitted.

What is the correct colour of the steering shaft (or is it called rod?), the shaft leading up to the steering wheel from the steering box?
Black or Ferguson grey?

All the original pre-aeroflow cars that I have owned/seen were grey across the range.

Ok! Actually, that is what I thought.

I do not think that mine has been out of the car previously, but who knows.... My engine compartment was painted black once. They painted the shaft black halfway up, and the rest (closest to the steering wheel) was grey.
Just wanted to hear what you guys here think..!

I will paint it grey, like the engine.

Definitely grey
