Valve timing

I have my valves set at 0.010” and I am trying to check the valve timing should I take the reading off the degree disc when the valve clearance reaches zero and the valve opens say 0.001” or when it’s lifted the valve 0.040”(1mm) which is how it’s done on most Italian engines .
Thanks Dave

What are you trying to check the timing or the duration. If there are no markings on the cam normal procedure is to set the timing using maximum lift at the specified angle.
If its duration you are checking then it depends what the data states. If the data doesn't state the 1mm lift then it will be as you say when the valve starts to open to fully closed (no clearance)

I am trying to identify the cams so that I can find the timing specs .
The cams have no markings at all , I am hoping to come up with numbers for lift 10.4 mm and duration so I can search thro cam manufacturers and determine timing numbers and recommended timing ( mop )

Hi, have you checked both ends of the cams for markings ?

Yes I have been over both cams with a magnifying glass and good light .
It would be a shame to replace them as they are new cams with only about 6 hrs running on them
