Door Check Straps

On a Mk1 should the spring steel door check straps be black or body colour(White)?

The clamp that supports the spare wheel was black. All other metal parts were white.

I'm not 100% but I believe the nature of how it works (part's sliding against each other) it should not be painted. Make sure the roller sleeve the runs along the strap isn't seized up and turns freely.

I'm hoping so I think you remove the inner most 2 bolts and bracket and leave the outer nuts tight.

Mine snapped with age - quite easy to fit as I recall. I am changing the hinge soon so I'll let you know.
