Drip tray for under engine on MK1

I was given the Duke DVD on the Ford Cortina for Christmas.
On the chapter for the MK1 Lotus Cortina, at the Cheshunt factory it shows a cover that was being fitted under the front of the engine bay.
Is this a drip tray for under engine or an attempt to smooth the airflow under the car?
Has anyone a picture of this cover, or better still, an original one surplus to requirerments.
Regards Mick.

If its what i think your talking about, its made of heavy duty card (same stuff as the inner sill finishing boards) and attached to the car by self tapping screws. I would imagine they are not present on most cars now due to being water logged and falling apart within weeks of being new and probably just being ripped off and thrown by garage machanics. Theres also a panel each side of the radiator made of the same stuff.

Had one on my car when I bought it. Chucked it in the bin after spending half an hour trying to get it back on after my first oil change.

Never regretted it for a minute.

It could have been a sump guard,- a lot of the rally cars had them?

Hi Mickmade

Here is a copy of what I think you mean, this was sold on ebay not long ago.

Hi Mick

Good luck with finding another one as this has been the only one I have ever seen for sale. Also It was sold for about £250 from memory

Basically a 'splash guard' then

I wonder how well it fits?
Was this an option or aftermarket item?
I think it was standard on all cars Pete. I had a "barn find" 1600E mk2 cortina once, really original, and that still had one on. Some cars still have the self tapping screws and washers with bits of the old card sandwiched between them.

Hi Mick

I would think these cardboard type of cover lasted all of a week in our winters with all the water and salt being thrown up from our winter roads.

I have just looked at my chassis legs underneath and it looks like self tapping screw holes along the length of each leg, as Brian said they were probably fitted on a number of models, (mine is a Cortina Lotus MK2 series 1), however I have yet to see one on any show cars I've seen (MK1 or MK2), hence why I think you will find it hard to find one to even copy.

Kev

The Mk1 cortina owners club have them.
They should be the same for Mk2's, you
just need to be a member to buy anything from them.
Part no is T44 @ £22 a piece.
