FGF 113C

I met Jason, a cousin who I had not seen for years at a recent family event and he was telling me about his latest aquisition, a Mk2 Escort RS2000 with 900'ish miles on the clock, for which he paid over 20K!
Anyway, he asked me what was the registration no. of a Lotus Cortina I once owned, to which I replied FGF 113C. He told that is the car in an article in the August Retro Ford Mag. about the MK1 Lotus Cortina with many photos of FGF 113C.
What a great surprise to see the car looking so good and now part of the Heritage Collection. I was also a little surprised to read that it was in original condition as it was certainly looking a little tired when I sold it to fund a new kitchen (the things we do for a quiet life!).
I did not keep any paperwork. but from my fading memory I bought it from a chap in Thatcham nr Newbury for £400 in around 1976 and sold it some 10 years later when it went to Wales I believe.
In between it spent most of its life in my garage, until I joined the Classic Saloon Car Club and entered my first (and only) race at Snetterton, hence the black cross on the rear.
I would dearly like to know its past history .....

This car was owned by Mike Platts, a colleague of mine at Ford Motor Co, when I worked there during the 1990's. He bought it and didn't want to do too much to it as I recall.

Eventually he had a bout of ill health and it was passed on to the Ford Heritage collection under Ron Staunton.

Thanks for the welcome Lashman ..

Keith, do you happen to know who Mike bought the car from? I am fairly sure a guy from Wales bought it from me in about 1985/6...

I have a photo of this car...if its of any interest (don't know where I got it from...I assume no copyright problems)...how do I post it up?

Its pictured, parked sandwiched between a GT40 and a mini at some kind of exhibition or other.

Hi All,
Pretty positive this car was for sale in a Ford dealership in Wembley called Alperton Ford in about 1989/90. I remember giving the FGF a slang meaning thats why it stuck in my memory. unless there are 2 FGFs out there.
The next time I saw it it was in the Ford Museum at Dagenham when I spent a day there as a guest of the Orion Register in about 1993. It looked to be in need of restoration then, as I remember thinking to myself, of all the nice cars around why have that as an example of the Marque. Other cars on display included the last Cortina made a 1980 Crusader, a Capri 280 Brooklands and a Model T.
The Orion Register had arranged a factory tour and we saw Mk 3 Fiestas being made which at the time was the only Ford car in production in the UK as they had stopped the Sierra a couple of years earlier.

That's when Mike Platts owned it - Ron Staunton used to let him store it in the museum when not being used.

Thanks for that Paul - It would seem that it is not an public display at the moment. Not sure if there is a Ford Museum in Essex - Cannot find any info on the web - Ah well - It would have been nice to see it again.
I assume it is owned by the Ford Heritage Collection ...

I have found information which confirms Keiths post that the car is still with the Ford Heritage Collection based at Dagenham under the watchfull eye of Ron Staunton. I guess I will have to wait until it is taken to an event ...

Thanks for all your input ...

Hi Andy

If you are realy interested in this car it may be a good time to contact Ford and see if they want to raise some cash. Not looking good for any of the automobile companies at the moment. I saw the LoCort at Gaydon in 2004 wile visiting.

In 2002 I was visiting some friends and my Friend asked if we would like to have a look at the 3rd Ford built by Henry, The story goes that Ford Motor Company in dearborn wanted the car but needed a board meeting approvale to buy it. Well it seems My friends ex boss wanted the the model A (oldest known surviving Ford, Pre model T) and Detroit couldn't get it together in a timely manor and Ford of Germany up and sold it. So the oldest known Ford is out of the Companies hands once again.

the link below has it a little different, but close enough...

The entire collection would have moved from Gaydon when Ford sold off Land Rover to Tata this year, as the site was an ex-RAF base and was the property of BMW/Land Rover before the split in the 90's, then it moved to Ford ownership as part of the sell off. I guess Ford would have moved the collection back to Dagenham as it's one of the few sites still owned by them with enough space to house it. I'll ask my contacts within Ford if they know where it is now.

PS. Ron Staunton is dead now.

3 phone calls to FMC head Office, Ford Information Line and some other Ford number given by head office and no-one seems to know where the Ford Heritage collection is.
I found an address for Ron Staunton, but this was obviously old.

I would buy it back if I had the chance, but might have to settle for another ..

its on youtube being driven by james may on his programme "james mays 20th century" i`m sure someone can post it on here for you.i`m hopeless i`m afraid!

Apparently the cars are spread about the Company - some in Dunton, others in Shenfield and more in a garage somewhere - lack of a suitable home & bleak profit outlook might drive them to sell them off.

I'll see if I can find the latest curator.
