Front Springs

I am looking to get some new front springs .
What was the height difference between a standard spring height and
poundage and the springs on a airflow.
I would like to raise the front end an 1" (road rally car) the gaz springs on the car are not level and they don't seem to know what they should be.

Hi Neil,
Try these guys, they remanufactured some Mk2 leaf springs for us,
back in the 90's. They were very helpful then;

I seem to remember that the front spring rate on our cars is about 140lbs.
Beware however, if you increase the poundage, the car will sit higher and
not settle to the same height as the standard setup.
Lotus' were 1" lower than GT's. Fortunately, springs are fairly cheap, so you could buy a couple of pairs and experiment.

Neil,

I have a new set of springs you might like to try they are for Gaz and made my car higher than I wanted it, I will bring them Tuesday assuming you are going to Matfield you can have a look and take a view I think they were 160lb.

Scott, although lotuses sat lower I thought this was achieved by sitting the cup an inch lower down the strut body hence "lotus legs" rather than reducing the spring itself?

Cheers

Brendan

I got some spare coilover springs from these people but haven't used them yet so can't vouch for them but might get new fronts as well

Hi Brendan,
The strut body its self is shorter on the L/C's.
But what I meant was the the car sits an inch lower.
Most of our cars sit lower than they would have done when new, due to the springs settling, as they're loaded full time.
AJT still has all of its original springs and I'm sure it sits a little too low.
I've just bought a set of Armstrong adjustable shock absorbers off e-bay
and will have them converted to coil-over and rebuilt. I'll probably go for new springs at the same time and I expect the ride height to increase by an inch or more at the rear.

Don't get them from Gaz Scott !!

Hi Pete,
Have you had problems with their springs?
I understand that 2 1/4" springs are now very hard to get hold of.
Most suppliers stock metric sizes, from what I'm told.
I'm hoping to keep AJT fairly softly sprung and will try to source
some imperial versions to match the originals.

I had loads of trouble with them when Colin was putting my car back together,- he'll tell you. It took 3 or 4 goes to get it right. Bear in mind Gaz refurbish dampers, they don't make the springs.
That's why I got some made independently
Talk to Rossendale they will make what you want

So how do we check what legs we have as they may have been changed I am now thinking along the lines that gaz sent me -1" I dont want to take the spring off until I have something to put on as the gaz ones are not level .
Neil

Hi Neil,
If you're lucky, you will be able to make out the part number
stamped on the side of the strut body.
I seem to remember it should be 28c-711 for the lotus struts.
You'll find it about halfway up the leg.
Scott

I have a pair of mk1 lotus struts off the car Neil, I can measure them up for you if you need dimensions.
Tommy

My lotus strut measures 12 and 3/4 inches from the bottom face that meets the bottom ball joint, to the edge of the seam between the spring pan and strut tube.
The strut body itself is approximately 16 and 1/2 inches top to bottom and the damper rod measures 9 and 3/4 inches when fully extended.
Hope that tells you what you need to know Neil.

I have a set of coil over springs in my garage you could have, Neil did not want them as they are gaz coilovers rather than std front struts.

will bring when next over if you want them

cheers
