Hi Folks my name is Kev

I have just joined today and would like to explore this site for info after keeping this vehicle secet for 16 years for security reasons.

I have a Mark 2 Lotus Cortina series one with the clocks on top of dash, Reg No XOO 869F Registered 6th March 1968, chassis No BA91HR***** with five numbers after the R which I will not put on a public site for obvious reasons.
I have owned the car since the 22nd March 1993, my god don't sixteen years go fast HA HA!. I don't wish to bore people but thought a little info might help me find out a bit more about my little GEM!!

I'm restoring the vehicle which has for most of the last 15 years been sat in a garage dreaming of going back on the road.
The shell and all panels will be going to Dudley (surface processing LTD) in July this year to be chemically stripped and electophaticly primed (the same process that new vehicle bodyshells go through today), It will then come back as good as a new bodyshell. I work in one of the largest bodyshops in the country and will be fully painted in clear over base waterbase paint, under strict supervision as I am the manager. The shell is in first class condition with just the rear wheel arches having to be replaced with repair panels (that was me being picky they could have been repaird they where not that bad) no other welding has been done, but has had to have new doors bonnet and boot lid at great expense due to the dreaded tin worm. About ten years ago I took off by sand blasting, all the underseal from under the vehicle (probably why the shell was in such good nic) and painted all underneath and under the bonnet in ermine white the original colour. I have rebored and reground the block and had hardened valve seats and new valve guides put in the head so it will run on unleaded fuel. I will take my time and try to get the vehicle as concourse as is available with the lack of new parts these days. I do not invisage me ever selling this vehicle it will become an inheritance when I'm gone, so within reason cost is not an issue as it already owes me about six times the originall selling price without the £2100 it will cost at Dudley in July, I must be crazy spending this amount of money but hey who cares. :D :D :D :D

A couple of question I need to answer is that the only new doors I could find where one series one and one series two door. the only difference is the top of the door skin at the top where it meets the scuttle panel one is straight the other has a slight curve. the old doors went years ago and I can't remember and nobody seems to be able to tell me which one is the series one, and I need to modify one of them but don't want to do the wrong one.

Can someone confirm the colour of the green stipe for the mark 2 as I have been told it was spruce green or sherwood green both these colours are still available on our mixing sceme.

I would also love to know more about the history of this vehicle if anyone out there knows anything. I was told when I bought it that as an XOO registered vehicle it may have been a factory registered vehicle for press purposses but DVLA will not divulge this info because of the data protection act.
It has only had 8 previous owners before me and the owner before me owned the vehicle from 19th Feb 1987 so only another 7 to find out about.
I will post some pics when I work out how to do it in the next few weeks and months to come as it progresses,

Hi Kev the D.V.L.A. will not tell you anything over the phone, but if you are the registered keeper you can request all the registration history they hold. Just fill out the form and send it with a cheque for £5 to Swansea and they will send you all they have.
The green stripes are citroen sherwood green on either a mk1 or mk2 but were dealer applied on a mk2, not done at the factory. So if you want it as it rolled out of Dagenham, then no stripes. Its only my opinion, but I think a white mk2 lotus looks best plain and doesn't suit the green stripe.
Anyway its your car, so you paint it to please you and nobody else, but stripe is definitely not spruce green.

Hi Tommy

Thanks for the info I will get the form and let you know how I get on.
I agree with you about the stripe not sure it looks good on a mark two myself. I need to make my mind up though as when I paint it it will be under the laquer cote.

Regards
Kev

Hi Louis

I would like know a bit more of your thoughts on the stripe, what about authenticity as I'm trying to build this as close to original as possible does it make much difference in the eyes of the people who see and judge these cars?

Regards
Kev

Well my mk2 has'nt got a stripe so I'm bit bias!
A mk2 LC without a stripe will definetely not get recognised as much, by your 'average Joe'.
If you are thinking of doing some concourse events any judge should certainly know about the stripe's being optionally dealer fitted (If not they should'nt be judging!).
Ultimately it depends on what you want, rather than if you don't mind people coming up to you at petrol stations and saying 'that's a nice 1600E mate!'

Hi Louis

Would people judge it on the wrong side as most seemed to have the strip on as probably most dealers probably did the strip when they arrived as there does not seem many without it, or do I not see enough of them??

Kev

There are only a few white mk2 LC's without the stripe now.
I expect most dealership's back in the day would of just had them put as standard and only left it off if someone asked.
I'm not old enough to remember if back in the day there were proportionally more or less stripeless mk2's than there are now. Anyone?

Check out my old post in the Gallery section titled White mk2 and see if that helps you decide Kev.
Tommy

Hi Tommy

I like the look of it but does look a little naked and as Louis you can just imagine someone saying nice 1600E at a fuel station though.

Thanks
Kev

I don't think it would make much difference Kev stripe or no stripe, the "I used to have one of those, but it was blue and had 4 doors" brigade will still show their lack of knowledge. Anybody that matters will know what it is as soon as they hear it running. Paint it to please YOU and not me or Louis or Joe public. It's you that will come out to your garage to just stare at it and think yourself lucky to own it so you have to get it right.
Also on my mk1 I had the car painted in 2 pack but the stripes in cellulose and that way avoided having to lacquer to get rid of the step you get at the stripe with the high build of 2 pack.

Hi Tommy

Thanks for the steer on the DVLA and how to obtain the vehicle registration details. I have now got the info back to 1974 and am now just waiting for the info from Essex council records office.

The vehicle spent the last thirty years in the northwest, which compares with the knowledge the LCR has on the vehicle being last known in cheshire in 1985 on another post, and I made contact through this site with a guy called Adibear (Adrian New) whos dad was one of the early owners and had it painted black with a gold stripe, as he was a JPS formula one fan.
Thankfully it had been repainted white agin by the time I bought it as per the log book. His dad said he sold it as the wheel arches had started to show corrosion showing which I seen when I stripped it down, it was not that bad but I will have to fit repair panels.

More info as I discover it.

Regards
Kev

Hi Tommy

Thanks again for the steer with DVLA looking for the history for my car they sent me to the Essex record office and I now have the info I asked for, it cost me £21 in total.

The vehicle was first registered from new to Ford Motor Company and I don't know what it was used for. the story I heard is that it was used by them for some press reason maybe?

regards
Kev
