Lotus are to return to Formula 1 next season

Will it be Lotus, or will it be Proton??? Either way, being based in Malaysia doesn't seem right somehow.......

I've read today a report claiming that Lotus don't actually have anything to do with it and its a group of ex-Lotus employees who previously ran a GP2 or GP3 team who've now moved up to F1.

Apparently Lotus engineering have "distanced" themselves from it.

With it being Malaysia....you'd think Lotus are properly involved. Wonder what the true story is then?

Not according to my paper this morning.
The team will be based near Lotus's HQ in Norfolk and headed by Mike Gascoyne, late of Toyota and Jordan.
Proton (Lotus's owners) plan a R & D centre at the Sepang circuit and eventually hope to have a Malaysian driver in the team.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today announced that Malaysia will participate in the FIA Formula One world championship through its own racing team - 1Malaysia F1 Team, starting from 2010. The premier said that the 1Malaysia F1 team was a government and private initiative, combining the collaborative experience of Proton and Lotus.

He said the team was supported by world-class expertise, and backed by the Sepang international circuit, Motorsports Association of Malaysia as well as Automobile Association of Malaysia.

Speaking to reporters at Ministry of Finance in Putrajaya, Najib said the Malaysian F1 team will be based at the Sepang circuit with pit stop staff coming from Malaysia.

"It will be a Malaysia manufactured car," said a proud Najib, adding that a race to find a suitable Malaysian driver was underway. A statement issued during the press release stated that the team will reveal its two drivers by Oct 31. At present, six local and international drivers have been shortlisted for evaluation.

This is what I read......mind you it was penned in june of this year, so maybe this was just a story, or Lotus changed their minds.....

"Lotus Cars Limited and Group Lotus Plc have announced they are distancing themselves from Litespeed, a British Formula 3 squad formed by ex-Lotus employees who have revealed they are planning to enter F1 in 2010 under the Lotus flag. In a statement, Lotus have implied they may even be willing to take legal action to protect their brand image.

“Group Lotus plc and its subsidiary Lotus Cars Limited, the manufacturer of the legendary Lotus Elise and global high technology engineering consultancy, are not connected or affiliated to, nor in any other way associated with the newly-announced ‘Team Lotus’ that has submitted an entry 2010 Formula 1 championship,” the statement from Lotus reads. “Group Lotus plc will take all necessary steps to protect its name, reputation and brand image.”

Lotus are not the first who are not happy about the use of their name in potential 2010 F1 applicants. The Brabham family have also said that they will be challenging Formtech who are intending to use the Brabham name to enter F1 next season. "
