I was contacted by a friend yesterday who had been offered a Mk1 Lotus that was for sale in South Africa. He had received photos of the car together with detail of the (repro) chassis plate, and asked me if I could him any more detail from the list of chassis nos./reg nos. that the LCR used to issue back in the 1990's. When I looked through my list, alarm bells started to sound when the chassis number of the South African plate was prefixed BA74EM59??? but the chassis number in the LCR list started BA74FL59??? The reg. number was also quoted in the LCR list begining with NAR???D, so my friend went on the DVLA site, put in NAR???D only to find that this car was still in the UK and on the road, MOT'd etc. When the seller in South Africa was questioned about the length of ownership, it was claimed he had owned the car for 23 years!! That was the end of my friends interest in the car but perhaps other LCR members should be warned, especially the current owner of NAR???D with the above prefix in the chassis number.

The same 59??? part of the chassis number will be in the chassis number of a 1965 car and a 1966 car, As the 59??? sequence repeated in those years. The different year and month codes for each make them different v.i.n. numbers. Therefore there is nothing wrong with 2 cars with chassis numbers BA74EM59??? and BA74FL59???
