Bit of a long shot this but is there anyone on here old enough to remember if the door check straps on Mk1's were originally painted white?

I don't think they would of been painted ? And if they were it would of been scratched off the first time you opened the door.

Thank's Keith but I have a nagging feeling that mine were originally white so I've painted them. Haven't fitted them yet but I can't see them rubbing on anything (please tell me if I'm wrong). I can't even remember how they work! Do they hold the door in the open position so it doesn't close on you when you're getting in & out?
Also, while I'm at it. I seem to have the remains of some sort of sleeve on the pin. Have I seen somewhere that there's a sleeve that is suppose to move around as the door opens & closes?

I think they were made of sprung steel in two layers which eventually gave up & snapped. I know of an original 63 car I can check to see f they are still there.

Hi Dave
There is a small ''roller' on the pin which allows the spring to roll off and permit the door to close.
Question; Are these available anywhere? [The springs that is.]
Cheers Geoff

of course you have to be a member to purchase from them. Fortunately Geiff knows a number of members!
Its an Australian thing. How are you Dave? Hope to see you again one of these days!

Check straps also fitted on the hinges of back doors of 4 door mk1 cortinas. Don't normally get broken on the back doors, so have sourced them from scrap 4 doors in the past.

Do you remember if they were painted body colour or just metal finish Tommy ? Probably just rusty i reckon.

Brian, I have two long term project mk1 cortinas stashed away, a spruce green estate and a platinum grey 4 door fleet car. Having just checked both cars, the check straps are spruce green on the estate and platinum grey on the fleet, so looks like body colour is what they were originally.

I put my glasses down somewhere yesterday & as I type this (1045 Sunday morning) I still haven't found them but the previous post confirms that I correctly remembered my door straps were originally painted white!
