Although i like originality i may persue the idea of a 5 speed gearbox. So being of useless help mechanically i need your experience or advice:

Am i right that a Sierra type 9 gearbox is the normal choice?
What mod's have to be done for it to fit?
Have any of you done this conversion and would you recommend it?

There's a couple of guy's who've fitted a 5 speed, It might be worth chatting to Seedy when he get's back, I think he fitted his not that long ago.

I had a 5 speed ZF box in an Escort Mk1 Superspeed back in '75.

Hi Howard, I am currently running the Ford Type-9 gearbox from a Ford Sierra XR4. You'll need a new bell-housing and I recommend the addition of a quick shift, both are available from Burtons.

I'd recommend the Sierra 1.6 box however, as the XR4 box I found to be too tall to pull evenly. The gear-lever will also move further forward.

The addition of the 5th gear means an indicated cruising speed on the French Autoroute of 85mph and 3,500rpm.

Drop me a line if you want more information.

We run a TranX type 9 in our competition Mk 2 (series 2), initially I made up a distance piece so we could use the standard Mk 2 bellhousing. We ran this very successfully for a couple of years but have just fitted an ali bellhousing (which I make and sell) to save weight. It isn't all straightforward with the ali kit (you need a centre push clutch release) but it does fit Ok with modified mounts. Our gearlever is about 1/4" rearwards.
I can post photos of the distance piece (which I now have spare) if it is of interest.
