Mk2 Cortina 5 speed conversion.

I assumed (wrongly) that converting a mk2 series 2 to 5 speed with a Sierra type 9 gearbox was easy.
However, having discussed with Scott I am now aware of the hidden pitfalls in respect of clutch, gear lever, bell housing, 1st gear upgrade etc etc.

So my enthusiasm is waning, but before I dismiss completely has anyone done the conversion and what lessons were learnt?

My rationale for this conversion is my wish to do longer trips particularly abroad.

Scott has asked me to consider a simpler option of a diff change, see wanted section.

Did Ford do any gearboxes with an overdrive like other manufacturers?

I had an MGC in the early 80s with overdrive on 3rd & 4th which would drop 500 revs at the flick of a switch

Transits, Zephyrs and Zodiacs came with the option of overdrive, but used a different gearbox, to cortina, anglia, corsair etc.

Hi Howard Happy New Year.

Have a look at the attached I have uploaded

It is an interactive excel sheet

All yellow cells require input

i.e

put in wheel diameter tyre profile rear diff ratio and the gearbox and you get miles per hour in each gear.

Have a try and if any problems then pm me and I will give you a call.
