Mk2 S1 Lotus Cortina-Starter Motor information

Hi all, just wondered if any member could help with starter motor information for my Mk2 S1 LC? Build codes indicate September 1968 and car is a G reg.

Is the Mk2 Lotus Cortina S1 starter motor the same as the Mk1 Lotus Cortina or is there one starter motor that fits any unmodified or original speck twin cam engine?

I’ve found a brand new Lucas starter motor in my mate’s garage, the part number on it is M35J and I’ve looked on internet and it looks like it fits BL Rover and Vauxhall. Does anyone know the correct Lucas part number for Mk2 LC S1? Also would it be in the Mk2 Cortina Ford parts book as I’ve got one? I’ve posted picture showing part number etc. It looks like the same size and type as the one on my Mk1 LC and Mk2 S1 LC.

Any help finding the correct starter motor would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Craig

Not sure if it's was was orginally fitted but I've used those before. Easy to get bit's for and cheap to get reconditioned.

P.S Never sure if it was a myth or not but were the earlier M35G lucas starter much better built with cast ends and all copper internals?

If it is a BMC starter then the front mounting plate is probably wrong, but is easily replaced with a ford one. How many teeth on the bendix Craig?
Should be 9 and not 10, if correct. These M35G and M35J starters are interchangable from most old fords of the period (cortina, capri, escort, corsair, transit) but the mk1 cortina, anglia, classic, inline corsair etc use a 2 bolt front mounting plate whereas from the mk2 cortina on a 3 bolt was used. It is possile to bolt a 3 bolt starter or 2 bolt starter in place of each other, as the top and bottom bolts on a 3 bolt one are the same spacing as the bolts on a 2 bolt one. (I have to admit that there is a 3 bolt one for a transit on my mk1 lotus at the minute, instead of a 2 bolt, but it was cheap and brand new from an autojumble)

According to my 1970 lucas ford listing CCE907/70 the correct starter for a mk2 is M35J 25148A/B.
My 1988 Lucas part finder XCB130A doesn't list the mk2 lotus, but does list the mk1 Escort twin cam and the B90 exchange starter for that is LRS102.
Hope that's of use to you Craig.

Hi all, many thanks for all your comments and research information I will look into what you all have said and see if my mates will fit.

Tommy thanks for the comparison information on other models, I will look again on Saturday and see what the bolt configuration is, and also how many teeth on the bendix. I didn’t think that this model of starter would fit all those models especially the Transit as I thought a van would be a lot more heavy duty than a car. Also thanks Neilsjuke for your Lucas Parts book info and thanks Lashman for your info about the earlier M35G option I will try to find out more on this model type.

Will let you all know as soon as possible. I will post some detailed pics of starter on Saturday night to get all your experienced thoughts.

Many thanks again for help much appreciated

Regards

Craig
