This example, NVX 144C, was first registered to the Ford Motor Company in November 1965 and was used as the company’s press car. It was in this role that NVX 144C featured in road tests for Motor magazine (September 1966) and Autosport (October 1966), copies of both of which are in the history file. The history from this point is unknown until 1976 when the car passed into the hands of Grant Cameron before being sold to David Barnett in 1977. Upon buying the car, Barnett discovered it had been painted Red, had a roll cage fitted, evidence of a trip meter having been fitted as well as some suspension strengthening. It was well known that Ford painted their rally cars Red, however, they also used recce cars that were painted the same colour to practice the different rally stages. There is no evidence that NVX 144C was used in such a role, but having been a factory car, it could be the explanation for the red paint and other modifications.
David Barnett kept the car until 2010, however it spent many years off the road before being bought as a restoration project by Andrew Dee-Crowne. A full restoration to original spec was undertaken and the car was finished to FIA Appendix K specification. After some light competition use the car passed into the hands of the current owner in 2014. The car is now fresh from a complete respray, brand new Corbeau sports seats with new TRS harnesses and a fresh set of Michelin XAS tyres. Today NVX 144C can be bought to be used immediately as a racing car or with some minor modification could be returned to more ‘road friendly’ specification for use on rallies and other road-based events. Lotus Cortina’s are one of the most recognised and iconic saloon cars in history, as well as being fantastic to drive. Here is an opportunity to not only buy a British legend ready for racing or road use but one with a fabulous provenance, setting it apart from any “ordinary” Lotus Cortina.
