I have recently broken up a very rotten 1600e for spares. Fitted in the car was a series one type looking gearbox. On closer inspection it has a very wide tailshaft fitted and seams to have lotus gear ratios can anyone identify what car it fits?

main case number 2821E7006-D

Tailshaft number 2821E 7A040C.
many thanks
Martin

Hi Martin.
As far as I know 1600E's had the same ratio's / gearbox as a Mk 2 Lotus. Mk 1's had 3 different sets of ratio,s. Put the box in 1'st gear & mark the output & input shafts with tipex & count how many turns the input shaft does for one complete turn of the output 3 turns to 1 of the output is 2000E ratio's which is the norm I think. 3.5 turns to 1 is a standard box & 2.5 turns is :D . . Bullet box ratio,s, high 1st ratio as per early Mk one Lotus. I think these boxes normally have the remote that protrudes into the car but you can put the gearsets into any box you want, even 1200 Anglia boxes so sometimes you can be lucky!

Hi Martin,
The number you quote suggest it's an early (series one) Mk2 1600e/GT/Lotus three rail 2000e gearbox.
It must have been a series one 1600e to have had this type of box.
Everything Ozzy mentioned is spot on too, so you can use his suggestion to identify it.
