Rocker cover

I seem to recall Miles Wilkins saying that it was Crackle Black, or something. I'll check later when i get home.

Ok, I've got Miles Wilkins in front of me open on page 180 / 181. This says:

"S/E Weber Domestic and Export; Lotus cortina 1963 onwards; Silver (Black on MK2)"

and

"From October 1968, the word 'Lotus' was cast in large block capitals at the end of the cover and had a polishsed alloy finish, together with its surround"

and

"Up to October 1968, the cover had the word 'Lotus' cast along each side and painted the same colour as the cover itself".

There is a thread on the forum suggesting that Oct 68 is wrong, and that late 67 is most likely when the change in the lettering occurred. Presume the colour info is correct unless someone else knows different???

Yeah, i have the Miles Wilkins book, and as mentioned in previous posts on this website, it is'nt 100% accurate. MK 1 cam covers(not rocker cover,OHC not OHV)= blue, SE= green, MK2 pre 68 same cam covers as MK1 but plain, aluminium finish, post 68 cam covers have Lotus above timing chain on the front of the cam cover, and also plain aluminium finish. Just flick through the Lotus Cortina gold portfolio at the articles on the car when it was new.

Hi Brian and Robert,

Haven't had chance to look in the book but don't recall any black ones either. I have Gold Portfolio but trouble is that most of the cars in this were at launch, or even pre-launch review cars. So can never be sure what really happened at launch I suppose, unless you were there. By the way, do you know if and how the lettering was painted?

Agree that Wilkins can be suspect and that's one reason I opened the debate... to find out! A lot of his stuff is around Lotus cars e.g. the Elan - I have seen Elans with black covers.....

Cheers
