HI
Can any body tell me how long a new water pump kit once fitted, How long should it last, i've had mine done no more than 800 miles ago which was fitted I year ago. when I had it done I was going to fit the modified water pump where you could change it with out removing the head.
So have any of you on here had the mod done,? I did look on the net to find lotus cortina spares to see the prices but it said he has retired, Does any one no where to source one and would you do the mod.

Cheers Paul

I did mine when I rebuilt the engine about 10 years ago - used the Burton Performance replacement option & it's been fine since - done around 10k miles in that time.

Fitted a original type water pump supplied by Q.E.D. in 2002, still running on it maybe about 10,000 miles later. I run with the fan belt fairly slack to try to make it last.

Checked my old receipts and m.o.t. certs and water pump was replaced Oct 02 and that makes 12500 miles on it so far.
Tommy
P.S. I replaced mine without removing the head, or removing engine from the car. Fiddly, but it can be done.

HI Keith

I will have a look into burton performance replacement water pump housing, Cheers.

HI Tommy

How did you replace the water pump with out removing the head, :? is there any way you could run thought that for me.

Paul

Jack engine off mounts up high enough to drop sump. Sump must be turned cross ways to engine to clear pick up pipe to remove it. Unbolt front cover from front of engine block and cylinder head, then remove front cover. Heat front cover in oven, press out old water pump and press in new one and then as the Haynes manual always helpfully says,"reassembly is reversal of removal". Top of front cover is sealed to head using a separate gasket from the head gasket, so this can be changed without having to disturb head gasket. I have done this on my engine, so it is perfectly possible.

Tommy, how did you get the impeller to locate into the block with the chain guide in place, tried it years ago and it doesn't go without lifting the head.

All just bolted together Rick, didn't have any problems doing it, other than awkwardness of doing the job with engine in the car. Put a new timing chain on at the same time, so haven't had to touch anything at the front of the engine for the last 15 years. I've got a bit of the usual oil leakage around the front cover these days, but loathe to touch it again while it's all working.

HI Tommy

Thanks for the heads up on doing the water pump with out removing the head, I will have a look into that and see what I can do :? .

Cheers Paul

Hi Tommy, I got as far as Rick and ended up lifting the head about 1/4" at the front to allow everything to line up and then as I had not got a new head gasket available, re-torqued the head with the original gasket and it has been fine fine for the last three years.

I put a water pump on LKE when I bought it around 8 years ago
I did it without removing head
