Air filter

Guys you may think I am mad but

Ive been running my 65 car with no air filter for 18 months. This car is a flyer. Fastest LC I have ever owned. It seems to rev very high and pull like a train. I have no clue what engine spec is.
However if I put the airbox back on the car it does appear to be slower and hold back a little. Is this just my imagination as maybe the car just sounds like its quicker with airbox removed. ?????????

Could be that the paper air filter in the housing behind the front grille is blocked and needs changing - or maybe the engine and carbs were set-up to run without a filter? The roar from the carbs certainly make it feel as though you're going faster than you actually are - it's agreat buzz!

When my engine was rebuilt my engine builder ran it on a dyno as he does with all his motors and he said that the airfilter knocked an incredible amount off (MK2). He suggested that I run without the filter for that reason. I rather like the originality of the filter but being an engine builder, he was sad to see the horsepower reduced!
He was talking almost 10% reduction on the dyno.

It rather depends on the dust conditions really, I don't run a filter either, and for the same reasons.

As I dont run that many miles each year, (3-5k) I can accept slightly accelerated engine wear.

Rust in our climate is a far harder problem to combat!!!!!!!

Cheers.

Peter,
Try using a K&N filtercharger in your original airbox, it should improve performance a little.
I believe the part No is E-9002. It's specified for an old Peugeot 205, but will squash down nicely to fit in the Mk 2 airbox.
