Body Tag data

Hello again... specifically what do the first sequence of numbers of the Body Tag, "436", represent? Do each of the three numbers separately represent a unique identification or is it the group of the three numbers which provides an identification? Are these three numbers, 436, identical in all Lotus Cortinas, that is Type I Pre-Aeroflow to the Type IV Aeroflow? Thank you.

Thank you Keith. Would the 436 numbering ID be consistent with the earlier builds, that is pre-aeroflow, or only those starting their VIN with BA74?

The bodyshells were assembled, painted and partially trimmed at Dagenham, before being transported to Cheshunt for final assembly. Each shell was allocated a body number starting in early 1963 at number one, through to somewhere near 2400/2500. The remainder of the 3303 Cars were left hand drive, which had their own body number run. There is a very comprehensive list of these, put together by an American L/C enthusiast, which is being constantly updated as new cars are discovered. Fortunately for the LHD brigade, they tend to live in dry climates and their body tags remain in place, whereas the UK based cars suffer the rigours or our damp weather and their tags are often lost

Does anyone know who can reproduce these body tags. I asked a good fabrication company that we use but they said they couldn’t as the digits are raised not punched in.

Trevor Wheeler at stage1.org do them.

Hi Keith,
I e-mailed stage 1 a few weeks back after I had read a posting on here recommending them, I never got a reply, maybe I should ring them.
Thank you

I have a question regarding body numbers. I am in contact with a Mk1 LC owner in Europe who has given me his car details:- build date is August 1963 and the chassis number seems to be within the first 40 or so cars built but the body number is in the 300's. Is the register sure that the body numbers started at 1, and what is the earliest number known? Thanks.
