Alloy frame with steel skin for a pre-aeroflow

Curious about the evolution of these. I thought early was all alloy and later was steel frame with alloy skin. Didn't know there was such a thing as alloy frame and steel skin - but maybe I am just mixed up and this is actually the "later" combination?

Part of the reason I am asking is that I have an all alloy boot lid. Where does that fit in the timeline?

My boot lid has alloy frame / steel skin. For the bonnet it is the other way around - steel frame / alloy skin....
