Cortina GT 2 Door 1968 Series 1

Hi all, can anyone tell me when and if there was a change in 1968 for series 1 cars where the rear radius rods were no longer put on. Also when the centre clock in the console was introduced. I guess the question is was there a cross over where some series 1 cars had some series 2 cosmetics. Thanks. Graeme

The change came along when the crossflow engine was introduced. The first mk2 GT's had the 1500 GT engine(now with a 6 bolt crank) Anti-tramp bars on the axle, the centre consol with no clock and extra heater side vent knobs on the dash.

I have a (supposed) 2 door rolling shell that came to OZ via South Africa. It is a BA96JU.... from memory making it an early 1969. It has tramp bars and a GT diff - is this not correct?

Not 100% sure but i think export shells kept the tramp bars. The chassis number you quote is indeed for a Feb 69 2 door GT. Another thing people have to bare in mind is many cars were re-shelled, try tracing the history of a cortina built in England, exported to South Africa, driven around for decades by numerous owners/modifiers, parked up for years then exported again to Australia. Just a suggested example.

Graeme, there were changes made to the S1 cars from about October 67 through to May 68, then what we know as the S2 cars started to come into play. I am not 100% on the dates so happy for someone to come along and correct me.

The centre console clock was introduced in Oct 67. There was a cross over period from around that May 68 time.

Mark.

Thanks Kev. I think he's done a good job and I was never happy with that situation. No point in ignoring the obvious. It won't go away just because we don't like it..............
And by the way, it was a good answer to the question.....hehe

It was'nt that good an answer, the original question was when were anti-tramp bars no longer fitted to MK 2 series 1 GT's.

Very broadly speaking, think of it as series I cars having them, and series II not - though a few series IIs do seem to have had them

I have a very early 1500GT Mark 2. It is a 4 door car but has no tramp bars ? This is a 1 owner car, all original and has never been reshelled.
Shame its so rotton its now only any good for spares

So did the early 2 door cars have tramp bars ??

I have to agree with the quote above. I had a 2-door Mk2 1500GT (1967 on and 'E' plate and I bought it in 1970) and it was exactly as described by Brian. It definitely had anti-tramp bars on the rear axle.
