Hi Pete , I'd be interested how you find the service from SPL. I've not used them , but others who have seem to complain that they don't show the shell much respect when dipping and it almost always comes back with dents that were never there in the first place. The prime place being underneath the floor pan where they have used the fork lift and others where they have man handled the shell around.

This could all be hear say , but I'd have definitly got them to walk around the shell noting its condition before the process started so there was no room for argument upon collection.

Maybe a quick phone call to ask them to treat your baby gently could be in order !!

Hello Steve, I have spoke to them about this, trouble is when they dip the shell it removes every thing including any old filler etc, the chap told me that its common for customers to find dents and dinks where they have removed the filler. My shell appears to be very solid but Im still worried what they will find when it goes to bare metal ! On there web site they have a video of what they do.....Cost around £1500 with the dipping and then zinc plating.http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/

Will let you know how I get on

Thanks Peter

picked my mates lotus sunbeam up from spl a while back, with dented r/1/4 , roof, quite common, wrecked new rear panel from poor use of the fork lift and a sill with a big gash in it from the fork lift prong.don't let them tell you they with sort you out a good price on future items, ask for a discount there and then.

Hello....well this is a photo before SPL......strip....dip.....& zinc !!

Thank you to all those for helping me with questions on this model, This website has been a great help. Im still learning and going to be asking more !

Hi Pete

I will be sending my MK2 there next year and I will be very interested to see how you go on.

My shell has been stripped of all the old paint on the main outer panels and the only place there was any filler was the rear wheel arches that have had repair panels welded in (very well I may add) and thus I know there is no old filler left on my car, so the excuse of filler being removed during the process will not be there.

Incidentally when I spoke to them they told me that they only do the stripping process and the priming process is not carried out by them, they take it to one of the car plants in the midlands LDV before they went bust, Jag and the mini plant, that is why the examples have different colour primers like grey Black and green. It is then taken through the same process of electrophratic dipping and priming that a new vehicle bodyshell goes through so should be realy good and very little rust should come back in the future as most modern bodyshells don't rust these days.

even if there are some problems with damage I don't know of any other company supplying this type of service does anyone else do this?

Good luck with it.

Regards
Kev

It had all the metal work done before I purchased it, inner wings and rear panel, I have had the bonnet/boot and doors done too.
Thanks
Pete

How much does that cost? Looks well worth it!

Wonder if you get a discount for 2 cars!

How are you getting the dings out as you will need to remove the primer to fill it?

Im going to seriously consider doing this to mine.
