Winter project - GBP 1C resto

Seems to be a lot of Plod in the roof?

I know it was a police car but seems a bit over the top?

How many puns can you get into one sentence..?

The roof was covered with a thick layer of filler over the paint for some reason - no sign of damage though so it beats me. (more police references to keep the theme going.)

Keith

Are you going to be doing any work on the inner wings? It appears from the pictures that some new metal has been let in at some point around the vertical sections of the inner wing support sections, where they meet the spring pan. The reason I am asking is that I need to replace these on my car. They have been done before but not very neatly and I dont even think they have been properly aligned. If you are going to be doing any work here will Colin be using some kind of jig to make sure it all aligns correctly?

Yes, it looks like both inner wings have been replaced at some stage and the offside one is sitting a bit low so will need to be cut near the top and lifted. To do this Colin uses a special piece of measuring kit that ensures the two sides are equal. The previous shoddy work was corrected by building up the surface of the wing with filler to meet the bonnet.... yuk!

The underside of the inner wings around the turrets have also been badly patched so all this will come off, including the strengthening uprights & new repair panels let in.

Can see why some people do a re-shell rather than taking this on. When cars were cheaper ( I bought my first car for £350 in 1975) I think I will buy shares in Premier coachworks!!!
Sleepless nights Keith?
Cheers, will be great when it's done!!!
Brendan.

The thing to remember the previous "restoration" was done on a budget on someone’s driveway. On the positive side it meant that the car survived and provided a good few more years motoring. On the negative side Keith now has to pick up the bill to do it properly!!!!

Keith , you'll have to rummage deep into your parts stash and see if you've got a complete set on NOS front end panels tucked away thay you had forgotten about :)

Are you going to redrill all of the holes for the police car fittings - horns , sirens etc? It would be a shame to loose those.

Hi Steve - funny thing is it was done in a bodyshop first time round as I have the pics to prove it, but it was most defo done on a budget back in 1990 ish.

Luckily I did have a NOS early wing in grey primer complete with Ford parts stickerfor which I paid the princely sum of £60 back in 1992 plus another that was genuine but had been on for a few months and carefully removed so that was OK, then I also had a NOS bonnet. So apart from the front panel, so far so good.

I could really do with NOS inner wings but dream-on eh...

As far as the holes go - externally, the roof hole stays but the rest go back to metal again - I'll keep the photos showing where they were. Internally they all stay.

Keith, I hope the markings on the rear parcel shelf have been masked up?

Colin has assured me (several times) that he will drape his body across them during the blasting process so that they will be preserved forever ! My worst nightmare is that the person doing the blasting has no concept of what they are..... 8) A leap of faith is definitely required in this situation.

In my experience he will treat the car like his own, you have nothing to worry about.

cheers,

Thanks Brendan - I know it's all OK, he's always reminding me. As long as I keep him fed with Tea Cakes then he's just fine...

If Colin can be bought that cheaply, I wonder whether a victoria sponge might see him putting all the police gear back on!

Scott - how could you suggest such a thing - that's bribery & corruption in my book - must be worth a stretch inside....

WEEK 2

Well it's back from the blasters - a lot lighter than when it went - so here is the scale of the problem. Those of a nervous disposition please look away now.....

Pardon the pun, but Col's got his work cut out with this one. I can feel a bulk buy of tea cakes coming on......

I am sure he will see it as a challenge and rise to the occasion as he does make exceedingly good cars ....

Oh, flaming hell Keith! I dunno what you're worried about. I wish AJT was only that rusty when I started the resto!!
Next time I see you, I'll bring some photos of a properly hanging bodyshell.

I do actually remember that - it always reminded me of that scene in Carry on Screaming where they grew a complete Oddbod from a finger.... you're right, mines not that bad after all.
